This course will provide you with an overview of how global goods can contribute to digital health projects, and highlight the value proposition for working with applications that are supported by communities of practice.  You will learn how to evaluate a global good to determine fit for their context and learn how to effectively engage with global health information systems (HIS) communities. 

Who is this course for?

This course is designed to build or enhance abilities to contribute to software development projects.  While much of the material applies across domains, the course will highlight specific health information systems (HIS) considerations.  It is helpful for both those who are new to systems development projects as well as an opportunity to refresh or mature skills or project processes for HIS roles such as:

  • HIS Leadership: HIS program managers, Digital Health advisors, Public Health Specialists, Implementing Partners, and Donors. 
  • System Support Personnel: Software developers, Business Analysts, Trainers, Quality Assurance Technicians, Help Desk Technicians, and HIS specialists. 
  • Clinical staff: Health Care Providers, Data Clerks and Clinical Informaticists.  

What will you learn?

By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Articulate the value proposition for using a global good
  • Understand the relationship between global goods and digital public goods for health
  • Articulate a global goods approach to software development
  • Demonstrate awareness of the types of global goods (sources and lists)
  • Plan and conduct software selection
  • Demonstrate how to  adapt a global good to fit your context
  • Understand how to contribute to the development of a global good
  • Identify situations where global goods have been deployed in your country or context
  • Identify global good communities of practice relevant to country projects and goals
  • Present considerations for building a local community
